A WOMAN was found dead on a beach near Whitley Bay last week.
Police were called to St Mary’s Lighthouse after a car was found parked on its causeway at 7am on Tuesday.
After a search of the area, they found the body of Cristine Martin, 54, of Otterburn Grove, Blyth, in the water nearby.
Officers carried out cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on Mrs Martin’s body, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mrs Martin, diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year, had gone missing from her home in the early hours of the morning, with her family and police carrying out a search of the immediate area and further afield.
A police spokesperson said: “Officers at the scene attempted to revive the woman until paramedics arrived, but when the paramedics arrived, they found that the woman had died.
“The death has been passed to the coroner.”
