WORK is set to start on Monday to replace or repair bridge parapets along the A189 Spine Road between Cramlington and Blyth.
The works, set to last six months, will be carried out on the bridges between the Moor Farm roundabout and Bebside interchange.
They will start with the bridge at Boghouses on the A192, just west of the Three Horse Shoes roundabout at High Horton.
Where possible, work will only take place to one side of one bridge at a time.
Replacement of parapets requires the slow lane of the carriageway to be closed over the bridge in question.
The preliminary works are scheduled to be undertaken at night to reduce disruption, but the slow lane will have to be closed at all times while the parapet is being replaced for safety reasons.
The project is one of several being undertaken by the council this year as part of a £16m programme to maintain a 3,000-mile road network crossed by more than 1,200 highway bridges.
Alan Thompson, pictured, the council’s executive member for highways and transportation and ward councillor for Newbiggin Central and East, said: “Bridge inspections along the Spine Road have revealed defects that need to be addressed very quickly, and that involves the replacement of parapets.
“Every effort has been made to minimise the inconvenience to road users while ensuring that the structures are made safe and secure well into the future.”
