YMCA is still going strong

Remembering Ashington in the 1950s and 1960s, there were many institutes for scouts, army cadets, sea cadets, girl guides and cubs which kept children off the streets.

Unfortunately some never survived, but Ashington YMCA is still there today, and even better than it was before.

It has been modernised and is a place to relax and learn, with a new café and quite garden.

Also there is a mural on the wall that depicts the early mining years by the Pitmen Painters – a 6ft by 14ft painting of the Northumberland landscape by Oliver Kilbourne.
