POEM: The Reivers

editorial image

Long dark night of lost hope

A glimmer in the gloom

Lantern light coiled rope

A daggers path to tomb

Carlisles’ are the cattle-men

Croziers they like corn

Dodds, Greys and Hallidays

Ensure you’ll never see the morn

The Ogles now a snooty lot

But never saw a shilling

Until going the ‘outlaw way’

Perfecting the art of killing

Creeping Armstrongs in the dark

Come with murder in their hearts

If you’d see the light of day

Move quick to other parts

Collingwood the daring navy man

Related to this lawless crew

Traced his antecedants back

To those fond of ‘mutton-stew’

Here the bonny reivers lie

Let none disturb their sleep

If you value life and limb

Be sure to guard your sheep!

Long dark night of lost hope

A glimmer in the gloom

Lantern light coiled rope

A daggers path to tomb...
