Young people attending a youth club in Blyth have thrown a party to celebrate its first anniversary.

Newsham and New Delaval Youth Forum’s Friday night youth club – the Newsham Getaway – opened a year ago has already proved a success.

The youth club, based at Newsham Pavilion, Miners’ Welfare Park, provides youngsters aged between 11 and 17 years with a safe place to relax with their friends and take part in a variety of activities.

And to celebrate the milestone, the young people made decorations, a special one year anniversary cake and organised music, food and team games.

Youth development worker Eva Nelson said: “There was a real need for a youth club in this area and it has been well received by young people and their parents as well as other community members who have seen a reduction in the number of young people who are hanging around the streets and getting involved in anti-social activities.

“We have achieved a lot in just a year and it was fantastic the young people wanted to celebrate the first anniversary of the club being open.”

The Newsham and New Delaval Youth Forum is a charity consisting of local people, youth workers, church members, teachers and the police.

Its aims is to create recreational and educational activities for young people.
