ASHINGTON seconds went down to their first defeat of the season on Saturday – in only the fourth game they have played this term.
The Langwell Crescent outfit totalled 161-7 from their 45 overs allocation, Matty Storey top scoring with 39 whilst skipper Martin Thewlis hit 21 and Dale Ross 20.
Annfield Plain had 50 on the board from the first ten overs and although Thewlis, Steve Williams and Matty Collins took two wickets each with one for Dougie Potts, the visitors – for whom opener David Maughan and number three batsman Shane Oliver both hit 48 runs – edged home with three overs to spare.
Skipper Thewlis said afterwards: “The difference was that we didn’t put any partnerships together when we batted whilst Annfield Plain had two good stands which consequently won them the game.
“We fell short of what we considered to be a competitive score and can’t really complain.
“They batted and bowled well and the better team won on the day.”
On Saturday, Thewlis’ side face local rivals Morpeth at Langwell Crescent.
