All-round display secures Blyth an opening day win

The cricket season could not have started better for Blyth at Plessey Road on Saturday as they beat Blagdon.

The visitors won the toss and put Blyth in. Dave Dent opened the innings with Chan Purma while Matty Senior took the new ball for the visitors.

But Senior conceded 18 in his first two overs with Purma taking advantage.

Johnson opened up from the other end and he made the breakthrough withy the final ball of his second over, Purma went caught by Senior for 18 with the score on 24.

Smith joined Dent and this pair moved the score along before Clarke came on to replace Senior and Smith took eight from his second over, including a big six.

With the score on 72-1, Dent’s dogged innings ended when Foster caught him off Clarke for 17.

Smith followed two runs later for 26 when he hit his wicket off Blake.

Clarke and skipper Lawrence held the innings together for the next 15 overs before Blagdon made a double bowling change and Gibson had Lawrence caught by Senior for 28 with the score on 118.

Quinn joined Clarke and the pair added 16 before Clark was out caught by Senior off Lakey for 25.

Kirkup came in to join Quinn and the pair saw the team reach their third batting point before Kirkup fell to the Clarke for 12 caught by Conncannon. One run later Gibson had Rowell caught behind by Clough without scoring.

With the score on 167, Conncannon had Young caught by Blake for six. Then Quinn and Walker pushed the score up past another batting point before, with the score on 184, Conncannon bowled Walker for four.

Quinn finally fell to give Gibson his third wicket when Foster caught him for 25.

Blagdon opened their innings with Gibson and Clough and they brought up the 50 partnership in the 16th over.

Walker finally made the breakthrough when he had Gibson stumped by Quinn for 45 with the score on 76.

In the next over Lawrence bowled Clough for 17.

Silva came back into the attack as Atherton and Senior had moved the score on to 91 when Lawrence had Atherton caught by Kirkup for seven. Then Silva bowled Senior for five.

Conncannon and Eyres were now at the crease and the score had moved on to 110 when Silva struck again, bowling Conncannon for 13.

Lakey joined Eyres and set about pushing the score along. Then Dent came back into the attack and he struck with his third ball when he had Lakey stumped by Quinn for 29 with the score on 147.

Four runs later Lawrence sent Foster back lbw without scoring. In his next over with four runs added, he trapped Blake lbw for two.

Dent then he bowled Eyres for a dogged 18 and two balls later trapped Clarke lbw without scoring. Johnson remained 1 not out.
