Ashington Cricket Club have said plans to sign Anirudh Singh as their overseas player for a third consecutive season have moved a step closer.

Greg Williams said at the weekend that Singh had received verbal approval from his employers in India and now only needs written confirmation.

Singh has had phenomenal back to back seasons at Langwell Crescent and Williams, 36, said: “Ani has had verbal confirmation and now has to wait for a written document.

“We are very much hoping that he will be able to come back to play for us because we have come so close to winning the league over the past two years.

“We have more than competed in the games and having had chances and learned from the experiences, we now know what it will take to go that extra step.”

Ashington start their campaign with a home game against Benwell & Walbottle, and Williams, recently appointed as skipper for a fifth successive term, added: “Benwell will be coming to us with a point to prove after winning promotion last season, and I keep saying it but there are no easy games.”

Meanwhile Josh Robinson has taken over the reins as second team skipper.

“Playing wise, Josh had a good season last year,” added Williams.

“He is keen to lead a side who under previous captain Doug Potts won the B1 division league title two seasons in a row.”
