Ashington’s hopes of reaching the final of the Smithson Cup were dashed last Thursday against Benwell Hill, from the higher status Dukes ECB North East Regional Premier League premier division.
Colliers bowled and fielded exceedingly well to dismiss their opponents – who lie third in the league – for 104 in 20 overs.
Graham Whitworth – who was on a hat-trick early in the contest – finished with 5-18 with two wickets each for Matty Storey (2-28) and Chris Watson (2-35) and one for Craig Wood with opener John Chambers hitting 33.
However, Ashington found the bowling of their Newcastle-based visitors to be accuracy personified as they struggled for runs and had only 24 on the board at the half way stage.
Scott Dunn (23) dug deep to finish as top scorer with a late flourish from Ian Sharkey (19).
Former Ashington first XI skipper David Rutherford – on his return to his old stamping ground – took 3-10 from four overs with Matthew Rodger also taking three wickets (3-23), Zohaib Khan (2-12) and Peter Jones (1-25) as the home outfit were bowled out for 76.
