Bates Cottages Cricket Club has been given a welcome boost from a successful grant application to Lakes & Dales Co-operative.

The £500 donation has enabled the purchase of a new dishwasher and cooker to enhance the club’s community use kitchen facilities.

Seaton Valley Co-operative merged with Edinburgh-based Scotmid Co-operative towards the end of 2015 with stores rebranded as Lakes & Dales Co-operative, in line with other Scotmid owned stores south of the border.

Groups and charities which operate or are based in communities served by a Lakes & Dales Co-operative store, are welcome to apply to Scotmid’s Community Grant Fund, which each year supports hundreds of community groups and charities across the north of England and Scotland.

Bates Cottages Cricket Club was founded in 1902 and the club is the home ground to two senior and two junior teams.

Both senior teams have recently been promoted from the premier division to the North Tyneside Senior League.

The club also sees a host of other activities such as a weekly lunch club, Christmas dinners and other events for the local community throughout the year.

Carolyn Baston, welfare officer at Bates Cottages Cricket Club, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this grant and we would like to sincerely thank Lakes & Dales Co-operative for this support.

“The grant application process was quick and simple and the funding will make a massive difference.

“The grant means our kitchen facilities are vastly improved which will be beneficial to the club and the community for many years to come.”

Katie Kipling, membership and community officer at Lakes & Dales Co-operative, said: “The Lakes & Dales Co-operative family is delighted to award Bates Cottages Cricket Club with this funding and to begin support for the Seaton Deleval community.

“As a co-operative we have a duty to support our local communities and our community grant fund is just one way in which we do this.

“Being at the heart of our communities is paramount to Lakes & Dales Co-operative and seeing how each small grant can really make a large difference is something we are exceptionally proud of.”
