Beaten, but Blyth team still lead the division

DESPITE receiving a second successive jolt to their promotion hopes Blyth still retain a 29 point lead at the top of the division.

Rain delayed the start for two hours and the match was reduced to 30 overs per side with Blyth, by the end, wishing the game had been washed out altogether.

Paddy Hartland with 48 was Stobswood's mainstay until eighth wicket pair Tony Wingfield and Mike Beverley came together. They had put on 40 when they ran out of overs, Wingfield finishing with 23 and Beverley 17.

The Blyth bowling figures were Andy Sutherland 2 for 22, Phil Kinnair 1 for 36, Mark Lawrence 2 for 30 and Surjit Singh 2 for 30.

Blyth's reply was a complete disaster with only two batsmen, David Dent

and Adam Purvis, reaching double figures with 10 apiece.

For Stobswood Mick Beverley took 1 for 16, Richard Watson 1 for 9, Paddy Hartland 3 for 20 and Ian Watson 5 for 7.

In mitigation Blyth could point to having four specialist batsmen missing but that in itself illustrates how little they have in reserve.

Stobswood 19 points,

Blyth 3 points.

DIVISION B1

THE B1 League game at Plessey Road was washed out with Bedlington on 36 for 2.

A wicket apiece for Rory O'Connor and Gary Cotterill gave Blyth a bonus point.

Blyth 6 points,

Bedlington 5 points.

ON a happier note Blyth beat Premier League Stocksfield by six wickets to reach the semi-final of the Thomas Wilson Cup.

Batting first Stocksfield reached 92 for 9 off their 20 overs with Andy

Wood scoring 33 and Andy Sutherland taking 3 for 20.

In reply Blyth made 96 for 4 and will be at home to Blagdon Park on Tuesday, July 7.

The final of the Dr Tom Barlow Memorial Cup, in which Blyth face Heaton Park, will be played at Bates Cottages ground at Holywell on Tuesday, July 14.

Both cup matches begin at 6pm.

On Saturday, Blyth 1st XI travel to Whitley Bay while the Seconds are at home to Bates Cottages with both games starting at 1pm.
