Boxer Carly aiming for 2012 Olympics

NINETEEN-year-old boxer and 2012 Olympic hopeful Carly Wealleans is hoping Newbiggin Town Council will give her a helping hand to achieve her life's ambition – to box in two years time as part of the GB ladies' squad.

Application forms are now available for a small grant in an initiative that has recently been launched by the town council.

Council chairman Will Rogers said: "The council has decided to put 5,000 into a small grants awards scheme running up to the end of April this year for individuals or groups with a maximum grant of 300 per application.

"We are looking for residents who think they can raise the profile of the town.

"Carly will be a great ambassador for Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and if she makes the GB ladies' boxing squad that would be a tremendous incentive for other sportsmen and women in the town.

"If the scheme is successful this year we could be looking to increase the grant."

Wealleans, of Avis Avenue, Newbiggin, began her sporting activities as a footballer at Newbiggin Middle School under the watchful eye of teacher Mrs O'Connor where she soon made the East Northumberland squad.

When she left school Wealleans took up boxing under the tuition of three members of the Scott family – father Ray and sons Paul and Keith who both fought professionally.

She now competes in the 56-60 kilos range.

Wealleans said: "A typical day for me is to run for 40 minutes in the morning, go swimming at mid-day and then into the gym at 6pm for more boxing training on technique etc.

"My main ambition is to get into the squad for 2012 and then perhaps swim at charity events."

County and town councillor Alan Thompson said: "Carly is a role model for young people and deserves the support of the community."

Application forms are available from the town council office on Wednesday afternoons or by e-mailing town clerk Dennis Earl on dearl51@tiscali.co.uk or telephone Will Rogers on (01670) 852357.
