Colliers sign Tait

ASHINGTON CFC manager Gary Middleton bolstered his playing squad last week with the signing of Michael Tait from Conference North side Harrogate Town.

The former Blyth Spartans midfielder made his debut in the Colliers 1-1 draw against Newton Aycliffe in the STL Northern League first division on Saturday and revealed that he had joined a club ‘on the up.’

Whilst with Harrogate, Tait was sent out on loan to Blyth, then when he went back to the North Yorkshire club, asked to leave: “They would not let me go,” he said. “It got to after Christmas and I got back in the Harrogate team but I wasn’t enjoying it so I saw the manager and the chairman, asked for a transfer and left.”

Tait, 23, continued: “ I was happy with my debut today although I lacked a bit of sharpness and fitness, because I haven’t played for about a month.”

I trained with Blyth for a couple of weeks and then spoke to Gary Middleton and said I would be interested in joining Ashington – and we struck a deal pretty quickly really and I was happy to join. Blyth, Shildon and Whitley Bay were also in for me but I just felt that Ashington was the right place to come because they are a club on the up. They’ve had good results over the last six months and have kicked on. They had a great run in the FA Cup, are doing well in the Vase and it’s a top club to come too.”

Reflecting on his first performance in a black and white shirt for the Colliers, Tait said: “I was happy with my debut today although I lacked a bit of sharpness and fitness – simply because I haven’t played for about a month.”

Boss Middleton said: “Michael is not cup tied for the FA Vase and that’s one of the reasons why we have brought him in. We have a wafer thin squad and we are trying to find players who are not Vase tied – that is the difficulty.”

He continued: “Michael will be a great addition with his quality in midfield and will add to our pool of players, not only for the Vase but also for our push in the league. We have brought a real quality player in and hopefully he will have an impact.”
