Crushing defeat for the Seghill side
SEGHILL suffered a crushing defeat at home to Bishop Auckland on Saturday, although they could still take some positives from the game.
Right from the start, Seghill struggled to deal with a much heavier Bishop pack, and found themselves driven back with almost every scrum.
Bishop opened the scoring with a try after six minutes, and soon added a second.
Seghill tried to force their way forward, but Bishop were quickly back on the offensive, and a spell of intense pressure lead to a penalty under the posts.
Moments later, only a fine tackle on the line by Seghill fly half James Goodwin prevented what looked certain third try.
But Bishop did not have long to wait to add the third, and moments later, as Seghill pressed forward, a loose pass was intercepted by the Bishop centre, and a fine passing move resulted in try number four.
As the half time whistle approached, Bishop scored their sixth try, again adding the conversion, to lead 32-0 at the break.
Bishop quickly added two more tries and conversions in the second half, before Seghill finally found a way forward.
Strong defence tackles held Seghill at bay and they were forced back to the half way line, where the ball was taken up by Goodwin, who made a fine solo run to the try line, unselfishly popping the ball to Ian Cook, making his Seghill debut, who avoided the tackle to score in the corner. Goodwin added the conversion.
But a fight back was not to be as Bishop pushed forward again, adding three more tries before the final whistle to take the points with a 63-7 victory.
