Ashington’s all rounder Matty Storey said he was ‘devastated and gutted’ after his side’s last ball defeat to Swalwell in the A1 division cup final at Langwell Crescent on Friday night.

The 23-year-old, normally a jovial jack in the box, was downcast after Derwenthaugh skipper Paul Dumighan had clipped the winning runs off the right arm medium pacer.

“Paul likes to dab the ball down to third man and my intention was to bowl the last ball straight,” he said.

“I was going for a yorker on middle and leg but I delivered the ball six inches fuller than I would have liked. Consequently I over-pitched and he managed to whip it through square leg.

“I was devastated and gutted for the lads because at one point it looked as if Swalwell were going to win with three overs spare, but I thought we pulled it back really well and showed some good character.”

However, Storey said that the agonising reverse was not the lowest point in his cricket career.

“That came about eight years ago at Leadgate,” he said.

“I had been called up into the Ashington side and Neil Wood scored a century for us that day as we set Leadgate a target of 280-290.

“Home batsman Neil Broom, who was about 50 not out at the time, skied a delivery to mid-wicket off Paul Rutherford which I dropped.

“Broom went on to get 160 not out and won the game for them.”

Looking ahead to the rest of this campaign, Storey added: “I’ve done myself no harm with the way I have played recently and I would like to think that I am establishing myself as a regular in the first team.

“After the disappointment of losing the cup final, we’ve got to move on – and the perfect scenario for us would be to win the league. There is still half of the season left and who knows?”
