AFTER a two-week break Ashington CFC Ladies got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over a strong Newcastle University side.
The Angels took the lead when Ashleigh Betts pressurised the home defence and her persistence caused a mix-up between the goalkeeper and the central defender which allowed her to slot the ball home.
Some good football followed from the Uni side and this saw them draw level just before the interval.
Ashington keeper Coral Duff spilled the ball and the centre forward was in the right place to poke the ball into the net.
The second half looked like it was heading to extra time until the Angels won a free kick following a foul on Danielle Clasper.
Lauren Kavanagh floated the ball into the area which the home keeper could only parry towards Megan Tighe who headed ball back across the six-yard box towards captain Clasper who swivelled and struck a neat shot into the net.
Newcastle pressed in the final few minutes but were unable to break down the Ashington defence or beat Coral Duff, who pulled off some outstanding saves.
The victory sees the Angels into the semi-final of the Northumberland County Woman’s Football League Cup to play either Percy Main or Lowick United.
This weekend the Ladies play Newcastle Medics, 2pm kick-off at Hirst Welfare.
