AFC Newbiggin ended their year by taking all three points in Saturday’s game against Blyth Isabella.

Newbiggin played the first 35 minutes of the Northern Alliance Nike division one game against ten men as Isabella failed to string together a team until five minutes later when they got their 11th man.

Newbiggin had loads of chances to take the lead, but efforts went over the bar or straight at the keeper.

Then two minutes before half-time, Steven Slaughter was the man to put Newbiggin in front.

After the ball was pumped into the box it was scrambled amongst the Isabella back four, which fortunately fell to Slaughter who slotted it into the top right hand corner.

After half-time Newbiggin had chances to extend the lead but were unable to take advantage of them.

Isabella continued to look for an equaliser and seven minutes into the second period it came through Daniel Hislop.

Much of the second half was an even game as both teams looked to find the winner, putting defensive abilities to the test.

Then three minutes from time, and twice in three weeks, Michael Angus came off the bench to score, only this time the winning goal.

Isabella lost the ball and Angus ran on to beat the keeper from just outside the box.

Newbiggin’s next game is away to Gateshead Rutherford in the cup on January 3.
