Ashington FC manager Steve Harmison expressed his disappointment after watching his side twice take the lead at West Auckland on Saturday – only for the home outfit to hit back for a draw.

Harmison said afterwards: “The players and the management are disappointed and rightly so after being pegged back twice.

“Again we have had things including a bit of luck not going our way. For instance, the second West Auckland goal came from a bad foul in the middle of the park.

“The game was played on a typical Northern League pitch - it was heavy and bobbly but I thought we adapted to the conditions well.

“It looked as if we were going to win the game only it wasn’t meant to be but we have come away with a point against a team who are a little bit on the up. They had a poor start to the season but they have had some good results of late.”

He continued: “When we go ahead we are vulnerable from restarts within five minutes so this is something we need to address.

“However I’m not going to criticise anyone’s efforts today because we did well.

“We recently went to Jarrow Roofing, came back twice but lost 3-2 when we should have got something; then against Consett we equalised and got a point - and today we have led twice but we should have got more out of the game if I’m brutally honest.”

The Woodhorn Lane boss has asked for consistency from match officials: “There were a couple of issues which I thought were poor today,” he added.

“During my time at this club, I’ve had players sent off for the same things which happened today and all I am asking for is consistency. For me if you raise your hands then you are sent off - Ben Harmison got red carded for us for exactly that when we played Consett at the start of the season.”

He added: “All in all I’m disappointed with the result but we came here and battled hard and if this game had been played six months ago, we may have lost it. The effort and work rate was fantastic from the lads again and it shows the character of the side.”
