ASHINGTON CFC’s eagerly anticipated STL Northern League first division match against reigning champions Spennymoor – scheduled to have been played at Woodhorn Lane on Tuesday, September 27 – has been put on ice until later in the season.
The Colliers won what was a gruelling second instalment against Shildon in their FA Cup first qualifying round replay on Tuesday and now prepare to meet Blue Square Bet outfit Vauxhall Motors on Saturday, October 1, in the next round – the same day when Spennymoor travel to face Ashton United.
After Gary Middleton’s side had defeated the Railwaymen via a penalty shoot-out, football secretary Gavin Perry received contact from Spennymoor asking if the Colliers would agree to seek a postponement of the imminent league fixture between the two clubs.
Ashington were in agreement and contacted the league asking for special dispensation for both clubs to have a free week in the build up to the FA Cup ties.
Both clubs said they were appreciative that the league agreed to the request.
