ASHINGTON CFC have pulled off a major coup in the transfer market with the signing of defender Matthew Grieve.
Ashington-born Grieve, 20 – released by Newcastle United at the end of the last campaign – put pen to paper on Tuesday night and will ironically make his debut in a black and white strip on Friday when the Colliers play their final warm up match against the Magpies at Woodhorn Lane.
Speaking exclusively to newspostleader.co.uk, Colliers boss Gary Middleton said: “This is a massive coup for us and I’m thrilled to bits that Matthew has wanted to join his home town club over another massive Northern League outfit and a Football League club.
“He turned down an offer at Leyton Orient this week and he has been registered with us tonight (Tuesday).
“This is the biggest player we have signed at the club and Matthew will be a fantastic addition to our squad.”
Friday night’s game against a Newcastle United XI kicks-off at 7pm.
An in-depth article on Grieve will appear in next week’s edition of the News Post Leader.
