Ashington CFC Under-11’s manager paid tribute to his squad at the weekend after they won their first piece of silverware.
But Gary Bell admitted that being crowned champions of the Filey Cup nine-a-side tournament, staged at Hunmansby Rugby Club, came as a complete surprise
“We had lost our first game 2-0 and thought our chances had gone,” he said.
“But from there on the lads won their next two matches then drew the penultimate game, and when we played Guide Post in our last fixture, we didn’t realise what was at stake.
“We defeated Guide Post 1-0 and it was only when the referee came to shake my hand and offered his congratulations that we realised we had lifted the cup.”
The competition, played over two days in Filey saw 12 teams represented from all over the country and was played under a league format with the top three sides from each division going through to the second day.
Bell added: “The lads played brilliantly – but there again they have been fantastic all season and this was just reward for the hard work and effort that they have put in.
“They deserved to win because they were equal and better to everyone.
“They dug in and produced superb performances, and after winning their first trophy, we now hope it will act as a springboard for further success.
“The first team won the Northumberland Senior Cup for 33 years recently – now we have won our first event in four years.”
The manager said that trials for next season were being organised to take place at the beginning of June, when he takes his outfit up an age level to under-12.
