ASHINGTON climbed two places to sixth in the STL Northern League first division on Tuesday night following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Billingham Town at Woodhorn Lane.
The Colliers went ahead in the 26th minute.
Mark O’Dea found Andrew Johnson down the right and when he crossed into the middle, Marc Walton stabbed the ball into the net from ten yards.
Within a minute, the lead was almost doubled.
Walton sent Gareth Bainbridge through and his instinctive right-footed effort from 22 yards left keeper James Briggs helpless but smacked against the crossbar.
Before the interval, Liam Atkin went close with a header whilst Walton and Craig Scott also had chances.
Two minutes into the second period, a raid down the left by Billingham’s James Cronesberry ended when he found Jamie Owens whose shot was touched onto the post by home keeper Karl Dryden.
But the Colliers retaliated and following a great move, Darren Lough’s power drive was blocked by Briggs then Walton struck the upright with a free-kick from fully 25 yards.
Ashington’s second arrived on the hour.
Walton burst past a defender and slipped the ball across for Bainbridge who in turn found Johnson lurking inside the area. Johnson’s initial shot was blocked but he made no mistake from the rebound, lashing home.
Midway through the period, goal number three arrived from O’Dea.
Johnson and Walton were involved setting up O’Dea who applied a right foot finish wide of the stranded Briggs.
