A Seaton Delaval school has won a second successive Under-18 Northumberland Schools’ League division two title.
Astley Sixth Form Academy’s 3-1 win over Heaton Manor in the play-off for the title was the first time Heaton Manor had been beaten in the league all season.
Astley had a fantastic start with a goal from Jay Wilcox only eight seconds in.
Paul Middlemass followed this with a second goal just before half-time with Phoenix Telfer adding a third ten minutes from time.
Astley have reached the play-off final three years running, winning in 2015 and now 2016.
Executive headteacher John Barnes said: “I am very pleased for the lads, they’ve worked very hard all year and this is a fantastic reward for their and Mr Cairns’ efforts.
“It is even more evidence that Astley is developing a sporting excellence in both football and rugby league.
“I am very proud to say that I am the headteacher of a school where sport is doing so well.”
Michael Cairns, football development coach at Astley Community High School, said: “This is a fantastic achievement from the team. I’ve been impressed throughout the year by the commitment and passion they’ve all shown to win this title.”
The school also thanked Mr Lamb and Mr Gilhooley for accompanying the team to the final.
