NEW Hartley Juniors goalkeeper Kyle Barnard was his side’s hero as he saved three penalties in a sudden death shoot-out to win the Durham County Youth League Lady Eden Cup.

The 3-1 win on penalties against Ryhope CW, after the game finished goalless after 120 minutes, earned New Hartley their third trophy of the season.

The game played at Jarrow was amazingly the sixth time the sides had met this season with Hartley winning three of the previous games with Ryhope taking one and the other a draw.

Both sides looked tired after a long season and it was no surprise the game ended in stalemate – for Hartley it was a 15th game in four weeks.

Over the 90 minutes, New Hartley came closest to scoring with Brad McClellend heading wide from close range.

Extra time saw Ryhope miss two clear chances and Hartley keeper Kyle Barnard make a brilliant save in the last minute.

Barnard was again the hero in the shoot-out, superbly saving three Ryhope spot kicks as Reece Farrell, Peter Ravenhill and Nathan Johnston slotted home to retain the cup for Hartley.

Tonight, Wednesday, is the last game of the season for Hartley and could see Lampton Street crowned champions when they visit New Hartley for a 6.30pm kick-off.

The team who beat Ryhope were Kyle Barnard, Marc Heaman, Nathan Johnston, Liam McNamarra, Billy Rodgerson, Dean Briggs, Kyle Downie, Michael Dunworth (Reece Farrell), Sam Norris, Brad McClelland (John Lowes), Peter Ravenhill.
