Ashington CFC midfielder Dean Briggs made a dream start on his England debut last week when he scored twice as the schoolboys under-18’s won 5-0 over Australia at Stafford FC.
Seventeen-year-old Briggs, who only played in the first half of the friendly, said: “We were 5-0 up at half-time and I was pleased with my performance because I thought I did as well as I could.
“I scored my first with a free kick from 25 yards which went into the bottom corner and the second was a tap in after the Australia keeper spilled the ball into my path.
“It was our first game and the management wanted to have a look at everyone in the squad so I only played 45 minutes.
“We have got a few training camps to attend in addition to some friendlies before we contest the Centenary Shield during March and April – but it is exciting times.”
