NEWLY formed Woodhorn Lane got off to a winning start in the Sunderland and District Over-40s League on Saturday when a goal from Davie Burns proved enough to take all three points against Gateshead Store Trough.

Following a first half in which they dominated, Woodhorn Lane were thwarted by the brilliance of visiting keeper Carlin, who kept the home side at bay.

And on the hour, the stopper denied Micky Lynn from the spot after Woodhorn had been awarded a penalty for a handling offence.

However, ten minutes later, they finally broke Carlin’s resistance when a through ball by Rennison set up Davie Burns who ran on and slotted home.

Woodhorn Lane: Garrick, Sim, Wilkie, Payton, Watson, Anderson, Carr, Rennison, Ramsden, Burns, Lynn. Subs: Monery, Shanks, White, Lyall, Sobey.

On Saturday Woodhorn Lane are at home to Hartlepool Park Hotel. Kick-off 10.30am at the Hirst Welfare.
