ASHINGTON CFC Ladies produced an outstanding display to reach the final of the Northumberland Ladies’ League Cup with a superb victory over Lowick.
Both teams are challenging for the league and it was the hosts who drew first blood when after five minutes Stacey Naples’ shot from just outside the box was fumbled by the keeper and into the net.
Ashington increased their lead following a Naples flick on to Karen Wright and the pacy striker coolly stroked in from close range.
Laura Jobson had a goal harshly disallowed before Michelle Stewart pulled one back for Lowick after the home defence failed to clear.
Laura Powell in the home goal made a couple of important saves to keep the lead intact as the visitors searched for an equaliser before Danni Clasper headed in to stretch Ashington’s lead to 3-1.
Wright went on a mazy run beating three defenders and fired past the ‘keeper for the fourth and Rebecca Caldow’s perfect cross was met by Clasper who slammed home number five.
Wright hit the post with a cracking shot before Clasper completed her hat-trick to make it six when she reacted quickly to latch on to a loose ball following Jess Hooper’s free kick which had been parried by the keeper.
Caldow scored with a stunning shot from outside the box to make it seven and Hooper completed the scoring from close range after another superb cross from Caldow.
It was a remarkable display by the Ashington Ladies against top class opposition to progress into the final where they will meet either Cramlington or Forest Hall.
