MORPETH Town FC crashed out of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday against Esh Winning.
Morpeth manager recalled club captain David Hiftle, David Dormand and Steven Anderson to his starting line up, with a place in the 2nd Qualifying Round against league leaders Darlington RA at stake.
Esh Winning took the game to Morpeth from the kick off, Craig Coates raced clear down the left his cross picked out Ian Ward at the far post and Steven Mundy pulled off a fine diving save.
Minutes later Ward again went close as Coates bent in a twenty five yard free kick to the near post and hid header just cleared the bar.
The physical presence of Ward was proving to be a problem for the Morpeth defence.
He ran onto a long through ball from Michael Graver and Liam Cairns just managed to divert his shot wide for a corner.
On fifteen minutes Esh centre back Lee Newby headed over when well placed.
In Morpeth first attack of any note Anderson shrugged of a challenge in midfield and tore down the right wing his cross was met by Edward Dines and Lee Newby cleared for a corner to Morpeth.
After a shaky start Morpeth were starting to play their way into the game.
After a great five player move involving Marc Walmsley, Cameron Patrick, Dines and Anderson, Michael Hall drove into the heart of the Esh box and his shot grazed the outside of the post.
The first goal of the game came on thirty five minutes Michael Graver delivered a deep cross to the far post and Kieran Megran diverted the ball past Mundy in the Morpeth goal to make it 1-0.
Morpeth responded immediately and Patrick’s fierce drive just cleared the bar.
Two minutes before the break Esh Winning increased their lead. Coates swung the ball in from the left Ward scored from close range.
Morpeth kicked of the second half with Jordan Fry replacing Dines in midfield. However it was Esh who were first on the attack. Craig Mickle collected a through ball, side stepped the advancing Mundy and rolled the ball into the Morpeth net to make it 3-0.
From the re-start Fry and Ashley McAlpine linked up and under pressure from two defenders McAlpine was able to bundle the ball into the net to reduce the arrears.
Morpeth were starting to have more of the play.
Hall won the ball on half way and released Patrick who shot narrowly over the bar from twenty yards. However it was Esh who were to score the next goal. Ward shrugged of a challenge, burst into the box and beat Mundy from fifteen yards to make it 4-2.
The goal of the game came on sixty five minutes. Anderson broke from his own half down the right cut inside and calmly bent the ball round the despairing dive of Jake Johnson in the Esh goal to score from thirty yards out.
Morpeth pressed for another goal and committed more and more men forward but this just created the space at the back for John Jury to compete the scoring and make it 5-2 to Esh Winning.
In the final minute David Dormand’s persistence saw him break free on the left but his shot crashed back into play of the cross bar, and Morpeth were out of the Vase.
