Mark Fitton, the head organiser behind Ashington FC’s joint effort to support two charities last weekend, described the response as ‘overwhelming.’

The club had set out to help Making Winter Warmer For Those Without and the Wansbeck Valley Food Bank by asking for donations before the Ebac Northern League First Division match against Whitley Bay. Mr Fitton said: “As always, the response was fantastic and overwhelming. Consequently we were delighted with the contributions from all supporters including those from Whitley Bay and on Saturday night after the match, two large car-loads containing sleeping bags and clothing were taken away.

“Then on Sunday we opened the doors again and received another huge haul of donations whilst being inundated with non-perishable goods for the food bank. We are so delighted to help two really worthwhile charities.

“All of our sponsors at Ashington FC had reacted fantastically too by sharing the message with their employees but I must give special thanks to the Arch Group based in Ashington. Local lad Ross Thompson who attends matches at Ashington, recently raised awareness by sleeping rough – but I must highlight that there is a dedicated team of people who are out there engaging and making people as comfortable as they can be.

“Making Winter Warmer For Those Without and The Wansbeck Valley Food Bank are both doing a fantastic job trying to help people who have fallen on bad times - and if anyone missed out on the opportunity last weekend and would like to donate, both organisations can be contacted and would welcome the support.”
