NEW Hartley Juniors moved up to third in the Durham County Youth League with a tight 4-3 win over Newton Aycliffe.
The game was played in Darlington on a 3G pitch due to the unavailability of Aycliffe’s ground.
The first half was all Hartley and they took the lead on 15 minutes when Peter Ravenhill raced clear and he superbly lobbed the advancing keeper.
But the lead did not last long as a mix-up in the Hartley defence saw skipper Nathen Johnston poke into his own net.
Hartley went back in front through full back Josh Day – a run from halfway saw him smash a shot past the Aycliffe keeper.
Then just before half-time Ravenhill was fouled outside the box and the same player took the free kick and his effort found the back of the net to put Hartley 3-1 up. This was Ravenhill’s 15th goal in 11 games.
In the second half the home side pulled one back through Liam Jarvis with a fine strike, but moments later Hartley scored their fourth through Mark Healman after good work from Billy Rodgerson and Dave Fairgrieves on the wing.
Aycliffe kept on fighting back and made it 4-3 with Jarvis again getting his name on the scoresheet, but Hartley hung on to take all three points.
On Saturday Hartley travel to Ryhope for the Durham County Cup semi-final, but will have to do so without Kyle Downy and Peter Ravenhill as both are on England schoolboy duty in Wales on Friday night.
