Ashington Woodhorn Lane Ladies began the new season with a superb display in defeating Whitley Bay Development 1-0 at the Hirst Welfare on Sunday.
Sarah Grahamslaw and Leah Montgomery made their debuts as Ashington started the better of the two promotion hopefuls with Laura Jobson and Megan Tighe both having good chances.
Izzie Coomber in the Bay goal thwarted Tighe as she pulled off a good save.
Tighe was then inches away from putting the home side ahead before Coomber saved well from Karen Wright.
Both teams had chances in the second half and Jade Gibbs kept Ashington in the game with a couple of important saves before Jobson struck the only goal of the game from the edge of the box with a rasping drive which gave Coomber no chance.
Kristie Fenwick, Wright and Montgomery had chances to make it two before Whitley came back strongly but failed to find an equaliser as the Ashington rearguard stood firm.
Ashington Woodhorn Lane Ladies: Gibbs, Hooker, Ginger, Kavanagh, Murphy, Jobson, Fenwick, Tighe, Wright, Grahamslaw, Montgomery, subs: Caldow, Brown.
On Sunday Ashington are away to Cramlington United, kick-off 2pm.
