Ashington FC skipper Andrew Johnson said on Sunday night that the appointment of Steve Harmison as the new manager was exciting and that it should give everyone at the club a boost.

Johnson, who is now sidelined with a groin injury picked up in the early stages of the Colliers’ clash and subsequent 4-0 away defeat at Marske on Saturday, gave reaction to the announcement when he said: “The core of the players are excited with the news and it should give everyone including the fans a lift.

“However, it will not be an instant solution, more like a gradual process, but we need to get points on board to survive then start to rebuild for next season.”

Meanwhile, Johnson was keeping his fingers crossed for good news when he sees a physiotherapist this week.

“I stretched for a ball on Saturday and I instantly knew my groin had gone because I heard a ‘crunch’,” he said.

“I have an appointment with a physio and I’m hoping the news will not be as bad as I first feared.”
