A YOUNG footballer from Ashington has been picked for the England 2012 schools’ squad to coincide with the centenary year of the Northumberland Schools’ Football Association (NSFA).
Seventeen-year-old Kyle Downey, who attends Ashington High School, has been selected for the team along with fellow Northumberland player Peter Ravenhill, who plays for New Hartley Juniors.
The pair will be part of the squad that takes on Scotland when the NSFA hosts the annual international schools match against Scotland on April 12 at the Sports Direct Arena, home of Newcastle United.
This year will mark 100 years since Sir Francis Blake, of Seghill, donated The Blake Cup to the newly formed NSFA, which was won by Seaton Delaval School, and has been played for every year since.
Famous players who have played for The Blake Cup include former England stars Bobby and Jack Charlton, Akan Shearer and Trevor Steven, and other top players Lee Clark, Steve Bruce and Steven Taylor.
Tickets for the international schools match are available from 07549 454651.
