ASHINGTON Ladies collected their first piece of silverware since forming three years ago with a convincing 5-1 win over Forest Hall at Woodhorn Lane on Sunday in the League Cup final.

The home side started brightly and in the fourth minute took the lead when captain Danni Clasper stroked the ball home from inside the box.

Better was to follow as Kristie Fenwick’s shot came off Clasper’s heel to make it 2-0.

Laura Jobson had her shot well saved by Anne-Marie Peart before Ashington increased their lead on 37 minutes when a corner by Rebecca Caldow found substitute Karen Wright who headed home.

In the second half, a flick on by Wright to Stacey Naples saw her powerful shot leave Peart stranded for the fourth.

A sweeping move involving Wright who passed to Naples saw the striker miskick agonisingly wide then Wright cannoned an effort against the post before Forest Hall, who had been second best, pulled a goal back through Natasha Wilson.

Minutes before the end Wright ran clear and rounded Peart to slot the ball home to put the icing on the victory cake.

Ashington Ladies boss John Sparrow said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the girls in what is there third season.

“They have done themselves proud and winning the league cup in front of a home crowd was a fantastic feeling.”

Ashington CFC chairman Ian Lavery said: “The town of Ashington is barely used to women’s football but the sport is greatly enhanced by the efforts of the Ashington CFC women’s management team, players and supporters.

“The outfit has come an awful long way in a short space of time and as chairman I have no doubt that this will continue bringing more women into the club and into the town to play football at a good standard.”
