Middleton adds Jewels to his squad

ASHINGTON CFC manager Gary Middleton has added another defender to his squad with the signing of Chris Jewels from West Allotment Celtic.

Middleton said he was delighted to beat off competition to bring the new addition to Woodhorn Lane.

He said: “Chris had been chased by two other teams in the top six of the Northern League’s first division and has got experience at playing in the division for the last two years.

“For the last six weeks we have been tracking him and monitoring his progress, and as with Craig Scott, whom we have also signed, he is another young lad with lots of potential.

“Chris has a very big physique and is a physical player – and I think we’ve been missing someone of that calibre.”

Meanwhile Ashington have released their programme of warm-up matches which include short trips to North Shields, Alnwick Town and Blyth Spartans, and games against West Allotment and a Newcastle United XI at Woodhorn Lane.

The Colliers will also play a sprinkling of ‘home’ matches at the nearby Hirst Welfare.

Saturday, July 9, Eyemouth (Hirst Welfare, 2pm); Thursday, July 14, North Shields (away, 7.30pm); Saturday, July 16, Ponteland United (Hirst Welfare, 2pm); Tuesday, July 19, Sunderland College (Woodhorn Lane, 7.30pm); Thursday, July 21, Morpeth Town (Hirst Welfare, 7pm); Saturday, July 23, Alnwick Town (away, 3pm); Tuesday, July 26, West Allotment Celtic (Woodhorn Lane, 7pm); Saturday, July 30, Blyth Spartans (away, 3pm); Friday, August 5, Newcastle United XI (Woodhorn Lane 7pm).
