GARY Middleton said his side’s 2-1 in their FA Cup replay at Sunderland RCA was a superb result, but the performance was even more promising.
The delighted Ashington boss hailed a terrific performance from his team after they came back from a first half deficit to earn a place in the next round against Marske.
“I thought it was pretty even first half and I was disappointed to come in at the interval 1-0 down,” said the Colliers’ boss.
“We limited their opportunities and we’ve had two appeals for penalties turned down.
“We said to the lads at half-time to keep going because we had been playing well and that opportunities would arise.”
One of those chances came six minutes after the break, but Marc Walton missed from the spot – putting his penalty over the bar.
Middleton said: “When Marc failed to score I just thought it was going to be one of those nights, but give the lads their due, they stuck with it, kept playing and scored two great goals.
“The result was fantastic but I thought the performance was even more promising.
“We won by playing some terrific football whilst defending well against a top side.”
