Blyth Spartans’ assistant manager Colin Myers was delighted with his team’s performance against Scottish Premiership side St Mirren at Croft Park on Saturday, despite going down 4-2.

“We were absolutely brilliant,” he said.

“We played really well in the first half and actually should have tired in the second, but for the first 35 minutes or so after the break we stayed really strong.

“We did tire before the end and conceded two sloppy goals, but overall we were outstanding.”

The home side will have considered themselves unlucky to go in to the break two goals down, but responded admirably in the heat to pull the game back to 2-2 before the visitors scored those two late goals.

Myers added: “I was really pleased with the quality of our football, which we have worked on over the summer.

“The quality of the passing, the confidence and the trust which the lads have for their team-mates was there for all to see.

“Technically we have some very good players.”

Asked if he thought his side performed better against a professional outfit than he had expected, Myers said: “No, actually I believe we can play even better than we did on Saturday.

“We are still working on our shape and getting more playing time under our belts.

“I only made a couple of substitutions on Saturday because a lot of the lads have only played for 60 or 70 minutes in other friendlies and will need to be able to handle a full 90 before our first league game which is sure to be a high tempo one.”
