Benfield took a first half lead when a clever chip from Michael Nolan ended up in the back of the Hartley goal to give the Tynesiders the half-time advantage.
Early into the second half a 25-yard strike from Dan Briggs brought Hartley level.
Both sides looked for a winner but it was Benfield who went 2-1 up with ten minutes to go through Michael Baxter.
Then James Darby secured the win when his 20-yard effort went in off the crossbar.
