A newly formed English-Scottish partnership involving four different organisations, made its first step recently to forging stronger links as a sprinkling of teams from Ashington Juniors met their fellow rivals.
Gary Middleton, football development manager of the Hirst Welfare Centre, said: “I have been liaising with Michael Hydes who works for Strathclyde Fire Service in Motherwell and Derek Watson from Motherwell FC Foundation.
“We have created a partnership between Hirst Welfare, Strathclyde Fire Service, Motherwell FC and Ashington Juniors.”
Mr Middleton added: “Recently, three teams from Ashington Juniors travelled up to Motherwell to play their community teams.
“They then had a tour of the fire station and lunch before attending the Motherwell versus Dundee game in the Scottish Premier League before returning home on the coach.
“It was a great day and an event which will hopefully be the start of many visits for teams going up to Scotland from the community club and Motherwell FC coming down to Ashington.”
