Premier League referee Michael Oliver put the whistle to one side on Sunday and played a key role in helping Steve Harmison’s Ashington XI win the Les Alderson Memorial Cup over a Bedlington XI at Woodhorn Lane.

Oliver netted a superb brace and claimed the assist for the opening goal, headed home by Colliers’ ex-centre forward Gary Caldow.

However, trailing by a three-goal deficit, Bedlington staged a rip roaring comeback.

Lee Scott scored twice in quick succession and in the dying seconds, only a fantastic save by keeper Lee Hall prevented an equaliser from Ben Harmison.

A penalty shoot out followed with Bedlington winning that contest 6-5.
