NEW Hartley Juniors got the year off to a winning start with a hard fought win over Newcastle-based Benfield Saints.

The Hartley side included Kyle Downy and Peter Ravenhill, who were both selected for the England school boys’ squad over the Christmas period.

The two sides met in August with the game ending 2-2 and again on Saturday both sides were evenly matched.

Benfield went in front through Adam Cole on 20 minutes when he slotted passed Hartley keeper Kyle Barnard.

The lead lasted ten minutes as Hartley levelled when Johnny Lowes slid one under the oncoming Benfield goalkeeper.

The score remained the same until the 85th minute when Ravenhill was brought down 25 yards out and a free kick was awarded, and the Hartley striker celebrated his England call up by hitting the free kick hard and low into the bottom corner to give his side all three points.

On Saturday New Hartley Juniors are at Brandon United in the league.
