Shankhouse brought the curtain down on the Northern Alliance season by lifting the showpiece Archers of Blyth George Dobbins League Cup with a 3-1 win over Newcastle Chemfica.
The ‘Hoose got off to a flying start as Peter Snowdon fired the premier division side in front after just seven minutes.
But first division Chemfica, who won the Bluefin Group Combination Cup and also made it to the semi-finals of the Northumberland FA Minor Cup, levelled within four minutes as Garrick Murphy-Collins let fly with a cracking long range drive.
Both clubs had endured a hectic run-in to the season’s finale with a glut of mid-week games to contend with, but there was little sign of leg weariness as Shankhouse regained the advantage in the 15th minute when Lee Gustard applied the decisive touch, tucking away into the corner of the net to complete a good move.
With the low summer sun casting long shadows over both Wheatridge Park and the 2013-14 season, the silverware was sealed in the 62nd minute when Joel Arnold rose to head home from a corner.
The ‘Hoose had tasted defeat as beaten finalists in the Northumberland FA Les Todd Senior Benevolent Bowl this season but were celebrating at the final whistle while Chemfica’s players could walk from the pitch with their heads held high after their Cup exploits this term.
