NEW Hartley Juniors kicked off their 54th season by handing out debuts to eight players in a 3-1 win at Lumley.
Last season’s treble winners struck first through new skipper David Luke when he rifled home a 20-yard effort into the bottom corner.
Although it was all Hartley in the opening period, Lumley equalised on the stroke of half-time through Mike Williamson.
The second half was again dominated by Hartley but they found the woodwork and keeper Armin hard to beat.
Eventually with only seven minutes remaining Hartley regained the lead through Callum Donahue before Sam Norris made it 3-1 with the last kick of the game.
Stand-in coach Peter Johnson, a former Hartley player and ex-Ashington boss, said: “With coach Mick Woods on holiday I was more than happy to help out when John and Mick Maley asked me and hope that today was just the start of another sucesfull season.”
Hartley were due to visit Benfield Saints last night (Wednesday) at 6.30pm and on Saturday play their first home game when Willington Town are the visitors for a 2pm kick-off.
