Walton wishes new campaign was here

ASHINGTON CFC striker Marc Walton cannot wait for the start of next season – even though his 2011-12 campaign has just finished.

Walton, who joined the Woodhorn Lane outfit from Consett at the turn of the year, plundered 14 goals in four months, narrowly missing out on being top scorer.

But now he is disappointed that his goalscoring exploits will have to be put on hold during the summer months until August.

Walton, 25, said: “I wish the season was only starting. I said when I came to Ashington that my ambition was to score 20 goals and I’m disappointed that I only netted 14 in 21 appearances because there were a few chances which I should have put away.”

He added: “Overall I was happy with my contribution and I have settled well.

“Things are going so well and I’m gelling with the team’s strengths and with the rest of the lads as well as they with me.”

When Walton put pen to paper from the Steelmen he was already cup-tied in the FA Vase and therefore automatically ruled out of that competition whilst Gary Middleton’s side enjoyed a fantastic run in the competition before falling to Shortwood with a quarter-final place beckoning.

“I would have loved to have been part of the FA Vase run,” he said.

“But nevertheless, I was hoping that the lads would get to Wembley and I was gutted for them when they went out to Shortwood.”

Walton, who recently pledged his immediate future to Ashington, will be far from idle during the coming months as he looks to next season.

“I want to get as fit as possible and to continue doing what I enjoy most – scoring goals,” he said.

“I just love putting the ball into the back of the net.

“Ashington are a club going forward and I want to be part of the set up.”
