An honest Whitley Bay manager Ian Chandler admitted Ashington fully deserved to win the Northumberland Senior Cup on Wednesday evening.
The Seahorses boss, clearly disappointed after his side had gone down to a 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park, felt his side were poor on the night.
“It was a very comfortable win for Ashington, who worked hard and deserved it,” he said.
“They took their chances whilst I don’t think their goalkeeper (Karl Dryden) had a shot to save, to be fair.
“Ashington got on top and kept us down and we were very poor.
“We tried to change the shape a few times and mix it up and do different things, but it just didn’t work.
“The players who have been performing consistently were very average whilst Ashington were much the better team.
“They were better on the night and that’s what I had said beforehand – it was a case of whoever turned up.
“Some of my lads seemed terrified of the place, doing silly things and trying ridiculous passes.
“I don’t know if they just expected to win – but that’s never the case, especially against Ashington.”
