Woodhorn go top of league

WOODHORN Lane Over-40s went to the top of the Sunderland and District League with a convincing win and polished performance against high-flying Sunderland Rolls Royce at the Hirst Welfare on Saturday.

Things started badly for the home side following a defensive mix-up with Alan Evans picking up a loose ball and firing in to give the visitors the lead.

However, on 14 minutes a good run by Woodhorn’s John Blyth down the right saw set up Gary Rennison to equalise.

Two minutes later Lane went ahead when Rennison played a superb ball to Micky Lynn who shot into the right hand corner.

Just after the restart, former Ashington player Lee Anderson, who had come on as substitute, slotted a through ball for Rennison who slammed home his second.

Woodhorn Lane: Carrick, Monery, Lyall, Sim, Burn, Blyth, Foally, Fitzsimmons, P Anderson, Lynn, Rennison. Subs: L Anderson, Sobey, Gray, Bowman, Acae.

On Saturday Woodhorn Lane are away to Washington Biddick. Kick-off is 10.30am.
