Karen Wright scored a hat-trick as Ashington hit Newcastle University for seven on Sunday to remain top of the Northumberland Women’s League.
After a quiet opening the home side took the lead in the 17th minute when Kristie Fenwick got the ball on the wing and when she crossed, Megan Tighe blasted in from outside the box.
On the half hour, Fenwick latched onto the ball 25 yards out, beat three defenders and netted the second.
Then on 48 minutes, Wright scored the first of her treble, heading into the top corner.
A short corner by Fenwick to Laura Fairley saw the latter’s cross met by Wright who headed in then Tamsin Brown added number five.
In the 70th minute, Wright completed her hat-trick before the visitors pulled a goal back.
Three minutes from time a blistering shot from Sarah Taylor took the tally to seven.
