A YOUNG footballer from Ashington is ready to represent his country at the home of Newcastle United.
Seventeen-year-old Kyle Downey, from Ashington High School, has been selected to play in the Under-18 Centenary Shield international match against Scotland on Thursday at the Sports Direct Arena.
The Northumberland Schools’ FA (NSFA) will host the game as part of its centenary season celebrations.
The NSFA is parent body for all school football in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside and provides competitions for boys and girls of all ages – from primary school through to sixth form.
Another Northumberland county player, Peter Glenn-Ravenhill, from St Thomas More RC High School in North Shields, is also in the squad for the game, which kicks-off at 8pm and is being shown live on Sky Sports 2.
Kyle said: “I was chuffed to bits to get picked for the team, it’s a great achievement.
“The international match will be an undoubted highlight of the season – everything is in place for a great night.
“Now all we need is the public to rally round, turn up and back the team.”
Tickets are available from www.nufc.co.uk or www.northumberlandcsfa.org.uk or via turnstiles in the East Stand on the night.
