Gateshead's experience too much for Seghill

ALTHOUGH Gateshead were the older side, they used all their experience and the strength of their pack to dominate the match from the opening whistle.

Seghill did not know what hit them as the Gateshead forwards powered through the defence for an early try under the posts, which amazingly, their fly half failed to convert.

The home side were pinned down in their own half, and tackled well under immense pressure, but the visitors' efforts were rewarded with a second try.

A fine kick up field gave Seghill a rare foray into the Gateshead half, but the visitors won the ball and raced down field for another try.

Strong runs by James Goodwin and Paul Latham pushed Seghill towards the visitors 22, but the Gateshead defence held strong, and they broke away again.

Early in the second half, Gateshead increased their lead with another try, and soon added another, though the Seghill defence disputed this one, feeling they had held it up on the line.

At last, Seghill began to produce some fine flowing, passing rugby, but still struggled to break down the visitors defence.

When Seghill indiscipline lead to several penalties, Gateshead used them to their advantage to narrow the gap to the Seghill line, and finally added their sixth try of the game, though their kickers failed to add a single conversion.

As Gateshead began to tire, Seghill began to dominate play, and from a scrum on the 22, they broke free, with scrum half, and man of the match, Jonathan Hepple going over for a well deserved try.

Defending on their try line, Heard stole the ball and drew in two tacklers before passing the ball to Matthew Sherman on the wing, who ran from his own 22 to score the try of the game.

Andy McLean broke free and was stopped just short, but when Gateshead conceded yet another penalty, Seghill took a quick tap and go, and Phil Russell found himself free to run in for Seghill's third try.
