Northumberland Vikings team captain Gavin Parr has joined Elite League club Sheffield Stars on a secondary licence.
As well as representing the Cramlington Sporting Club-based Cycle Speedway team in the Northern League, he will also compete country wide in the top league in the sport.
Gavin has been back in the sport for two years and has shown on the national stage that he is one of the top 40 riders in the country.
He said: “I was approached by the Sheffield club midway through last season and have thought long and hard about the decision.
“Teams include Poole in Dorset, Newport, Ipswich and Oxford so the travelling was the major issue. Approaching my 42nd birthday I decided that if I didn’t give it a go now I may not get another opportunity.”
A spokesman for the Sheffield club said: “Gavin is a rider we have been watching for some time. We first spoke with him around six months ago to register our interest.
“At times last season we lacked that mature influence in the team, so we see Gavin as just the man to fill that position.”
With Sheffield having a large squad of young riders, Parr’s steadying influence, enthusiasm and point scoring ability is just what the Stars require.
With the Northern League and Elite League running on different weekends it will still mean that Parr will be available to represent the Cramlington-based Vikings on the new purpose built track, which is nearing completion within the grounds of the Sporting Club.
